| The second monumental bronze
work ordered by bishop Bernward is the Pillar
of Christ, which may approximately be dated
to 1020.
This figurative ore work was not orinally
intended for the Cathedral but for the eastern
chancel of St.Michael. Here it rested until
the 18th century.
In 1810 citizens interested in history
placed the pillar, as a memorial of medieval
art, on the Cathedral´s court, in
order to save it from the smelting furnace.
For better preservation it was relocated
into the Cathedral at the end of the 19th
century.
After the example of emperor Trajan´s
Roman victory pillars, the Christ Column
depicts twenty-four scenes from Christ´s
life in a spiraling string of reliefs.
It begins with the baptism of Jesus in
river Jordan, continues with scenes of Jesus´
public work, especially the miracles. It
concludes with the messiah´s triumphant
entry into Jerusalem.
The pillar´s current capital is a
19th century reproduction.
The pillar´s original crowning was
made up by a cross, melted down in 1544.
Embodiments of the four rivers of paradise
kneel at the base of the pillar,
with water flowing from their urns to all
four points of the compass.
