| A relic miracle is said to have inspired
Ludwig ´the pious´ to build St.Mary´s
chapel on what is today the Cathedral´s court.
According to an old legend the Thousand-Year-Old
Rose Tree, which surrounds the apse of the Cathedral,
marks the location of this holy place, to which
the city and diocese of Hildesheim owe their existence.
The Cathedral, initiated by bishop Altfried in
872 and completed by bishop Hezilo in 1061, was
rebuilt in her original shape after being severely
damaged during World War II.
The medieval furnishing of the Cathedral with
crowns of light, relic shrines and bronze font
is unique in Europe.
Especially the two monumental bronze works dating
back to the early 11th century, the pillar of
Christ and the Bernward door, constitute exceptional
artistic achievements.
