Cathedral Crypt

The crypt has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries. Today it mainly serves as a chapel for sacraments.

The plain block altar erected in the eastern part is fitted in the tradition of the original altar, which Ludwig ´the pious´ ordered to be built at the location of the relic miracle almost twelve centuries ago.

The relics of bishop St.Godehard rest in the western part of the crypt.

The golden shrine that contains his remains is placed above the old tomb of St.Godehard since 1972. His honorary casket was likely begun shortly after the elevation of the remains. Thus it is among the oldest medieval relic shrines.
