| Hildesheim´s cathedral
treasure is among the large church treasures in Europe.
The precious objects, collected in over a thousand years,
provide evidence of a lively faith.
As works of art and historic documents their value
is inestimable. Ludwig´s reliquiar of Mary, the
oldest (815) item of the collection, may serve as an
example. The collection owes its outstanding importance
to the numerous magnificent items added by bishop Bernward,
to the Cathedral´s golden madonna which is one
of the oldest figurines of Mary in occidental art, and
to the liturgic equipment and handwritings from St.Michael.
It is a shared heritage of both historically closely
connected churches, with its treasures placed in the
care of the Cathedral´s museum.
