St.Michael, built
by Bishop Bernward from 1010 to 1022 a.D., is regarded
as a key work of medieval architecture. With the Cathedral
and its treasure a unique ensemble of medieval fitting
art has been preserved in Hildesheim.
Combined, both neighboring and historically connected
churches convey an overview over the design and fitting
of a romanesque church interior, comprehensively as nowhere
else.
The magnificent architecture of St.Michael, the monumental
medieval fittings in the Cathedral, and the splendid church
treasures of both, combined in the Cathedral Treasure,
make Hildesheim a true center of romanesque art.
