Chancel Barrier

Bernward was canonized in 1192 and St.Michael´s church increasingly became a site for his veneration. Thus some changes in the construction were undertaken. Lower church and monk´s choir were expanded with the entire western crossing.

The choir barrier was crafted 1194 – 1197 as a separating element between the crossing and the transept in the course of these changes. The opposite part has been destroyed in 1662.

13 angels are located on the southern side of the barrier, originally directly above the choir stalls of the monks. The northern side portrays a part of heavenly Jerusalem: Mary and the infant Jesus in the middle, St.Peter, St.Jacob and St.Benedict to the left, St.Paul, St.John and St.Bernward (with St.Michael´s church resting on his hand) to the right.
