Cloister

St.Michael originally was the result of a monastery´s founding. Bernward built the Benedictine monastery on a hill to the north of the Cathedral.

The foundation of the monastery was linked to an older church building – the cross chapel – which Bernward had chosen in 996 to hold a relic of the Holy Cross.

Even this newly founded monastery already had a cloister. It was renewed in 1250.

From the entire structure, only the west wing is preserved. The chapterhall was originally located next to it.

The portal, which led to the hall, is preserved.
