| As early as he laid its foundation
stone in 1010 Bernward planned to be buried in St.Michael.
Therefore the crypt, where he wished to be buried,
was soon consecrated on St.Michael´s day,
September 29, 1015. Originally the crypt had
been open towards the nave. The crypt, as a center
of the western part of the church orinally corresponded
with the cross altar as the center of the eastern
part, which unfortunately is not preserved.
Bernward´s grave, consisting of sarcophagus,
lid, and memorial slab, were likely commissioned
by Bernward himself. The sarcophagus is a plain,
hewed block of sandstone. Its lid is richly decorated
with sculptures.
Since the reformation 1542 St.Michael serves
as a Protestant parish church. Its crypt with
Bernward´s grave remained in Catholic use. |
