Crypt

As early as he laid its foundation stone in 1010 Bernward planned to be buried in St.Michael. Therefore the crypt, where he wished to be buried, was soon consecrated on St.Michael´s day, September 29, 1015.

Originally the crypt had been open towards the nave. The crypt, as a center of the western part of the church orinally corresponded with the cross altar as the center of the eastern part, which unfortunately is not preserved.

Bernward´s grave, consisting of sarcophagus, lid, and memorial slab, were likely commissioned by Bernward himself. The sarcophagus is a plain, hewed block of sandstone. Its lid is richly decorated with sculptures.

Since the reformation 1542 St.Michael serves as a Protestant parish church. Its crypt with Bernward´s grave remained in Catholic use.
