| Founded in 1010 a.D., St.Michael´s
church thrones like a skycastle above the historic
city center of Hildesheim.
Two crossing towers, two transepts flanked by
stair towers, and two chancel structures hint
at the alignment after clear mathematical principles,
even if told from the exterior alone.
The founder, bishop Bernward (993 – 1022
a.D.) wished to mirror the beauty of the divine
order in this way.
Outstandingly fine are the furnishings of the
12th and 13th centuries. The rich stuccatures
represent the most extensive ensemble of their
kind north of the Alps.
The painted wooden ceiling (approx. 1230 a.D.),
almost 30 meters in length and depicting the genealogical
tree of Christ, is the most monumental work of
its kind in all of Europe.
